Misted double glazing: replace the unit or the whole window?

Condensation inside double glazed units explained for Warrington homeowners. When sealed unit replacement fixes misted windows and when full frame replacement makes sense.

Misted double glazing means moisture has got between the two panes of glass. It usually starts as small patches and spreads until the unit looks permanently foggy. It is common on older uPVC windows across Warrington and Swinton, especially on south facing elevations that heat and cool through the day.

Why it happens

Double glazed units are sealed at the factory. Over time the edge seal can fail, allowing moisture into the cavity. Once the desiccant inside the spacer bar is saturated, condensation becomes visible and will not clear on its own.

It is not caused by poor ventilation inside your home, though people often confuse internal condensation on the room facing pane with a failed sealed unit.

Replace the glass unit or the whole window?

If the frames are sound, straight and still close properly, replacing the sealed unit (the glass only) is often enough. We measure the unit, manufacture a new one to size and swap it in the existing frame.

If the frame is warped, the hinges are failing, or you want better thermal performance anyway, a full window replacement may be better value long term. We survey in person and quote both options honestly.

New sealed units use low-e glass and warm edge spacer bars where specified. We match unit thickness to the existing frame so beads and gaskets sit correctly without forcing.

What misted windows cost to fix

Sealed unit replacement depends on size, glass type and access. Full window replacement quotes include supply, fit and disposal of the old units. Phoenix Windows & Doors provides free surveys across Warrington and Swinton with no obligation.

When to act

Misted units reduce clarity and can affect kerb appeal if you are selling. They also indicate the seal has failed, so thermal performance has dropped. Early replacement stops moisture spreading and avoids further damage to beads and gaskets around the glass.

Epwin frames when full replacement is needed

When several units have failed or the profile is outdated, we quote Epwin replacement windows with new multi chamber frames and factory sealed units. Hardware, vents and finish are chosen at survey so the installation matches how you use each room.
